Liberty Hill's sales tax revenue down 3.79% from June 2009

A report issued June 8 by the Texas State Comptroller shows sales tax revenue for the City of Liberty Hill during the month of June is down 3.79 percent compared to June 2009, a trend the Comptroller says is impacting cities across the state.
The City of Liberty Hill received a check this month for $33,952.18, down 3.79 percent from June 2009. But year-to-date totals for 2010 are up by 1 percent from this time last year -- $252,831.69 compared to $250,311.55.
So far this calendar year, Comptroller Susan Combs reports city sales tax allocations statewide are still down 2.9 percent from this time period last year. However, state sales tax revenue during the same time period saw a 2.2 percent increase. State sales tax revenue in June and local sales tax allocations in July represent sales that occurred in May.
“Total sales tax collections have now slightly exceeded year-ago levels for a third consecutive month,” Combs said. “Net collections in the oil and gas and manufacturing sectors expanded, but collections from the all-important retail sector were down from the year-ago level. While overall economic activity is no longer contracting, a resumption of solid growth in sales tax collections is not yet in evidence.”

Sales tax revenue up statewide, but down in Liberty Hill

Texas Comptroller Susan Combs announced the state collected $1.68 billion in sales tax revenue in April, up 1.4 percent compared to April 2009, but sales tax revenues for Liberty Hill dropped during the same period.
According to a report issued May 12 by the Comptroller's Office, sales tax revenue dropped by 0.98 percent in Liberty Hill from $42,995.38 in April 2009 to $42,571.80 last month. So far this year, the City has collected $179,944.62 in sales tax revenue compared to $180,267.51 in 2009.
“This modest increase is welcome after 14 consecutive months of year-over-year declines,” Combs said. “Retail trade saw a nearly 5 percent increase in collections, and gains also occurred in the manufacturing sector. Offsetting this were remittances from the oil and natural gas production sector and construction, which continued to decline, but at rates moderating substantially from those seen earlier this fiscal year. April may signal the beginning of a recovery in sales tax collections, although further declines may occur as the sales tax gradually returns to growth.”
Combs will send May sales tax allocations of $385.2 million to Texas cities, up 5 percent compared to May 2009. Calendar year-to-date, city sales tax allocations remain down 4.4 percent compared to the same period last year. Texas counties will receive sales tax payments of $33.7 million, up 3.8 percent compared to one year ago. Calendar year-to-date, county sales tax allocations are 9.4 percent lower than last year.
May’s sales tax allocations to local governments represent March sales that were reported to the Comptroller in April by monthly tax filers and January, February and March sales reported to the Comptroller in April by quarterly tax filers.

She grew up in a different kind of family, and describes her parents as "free-spirited and independent thinkers." She tells a story about a day when the sky turned dark over their Houston area home, and as radio announcers warned residents to take cover, her father ordered the family to the roof where they could see an approaching tornado.
As a child, Michele Murphy spent a lot of time playing on the roof of her family's home so going there to watch a funnel cloud didn't seem all that unusual at the time. Her mother was a tap dancer and professional acrobat, so Michele didn't worry so much about climbing too high or even falling down. She was comfortable wherever she managed to find herself, whether it be on a rooftop, on a stage, in a recording studio, or in a small building in downtown Liberty Hill where today she is turning kids into rock stars.
 Schlitterbahn Waterpark in Cedar Park
could bring 1,000 jobs to area

The Cedar Park City Council Thursday approved a development agreement and a plan to extend sales tax revenues for infrastructure around a proposed 95-acre Schlitterbahn Waterpark on RM 1431 between US 183 and IH-35. The project could create more than 1,000 jobs and construction will be complete in 2012.
Heavily traveled highways through The Hill may be best lure for new business

Liberty Hill's location may be its biggest asset when it comes to attracting new business.
At a recent meeting of the City's Economic Development Corporation, members brainstormed about how to entice new businesses to the area and discussed the type of businesses they would like to see here. The discussion was prompted by questions from the EDC Board's newest appointed member, George Nassour.

Council hears proposal for downtown parking lot

The Liberty Hill City Council authorized the Planning & Zoning Commission to continue negotiations with AT&T for the development of a parking lot on a strip of property the corporation owns adjacent to FM 1869. The proposal would add 25 parking spaces for downtown businesses.
